Look Listen Land

Look Listen Land is a project by M. Michelle Illuminato + Michelle Swinehart. It emerged from our Wildfire + Water: Artists and Scientists Adapting to Change residency at Playa in Summer Lake.

From 2025 – 2026 we were inspired by the complexity, beauty, and people who live, use, and work in Lake County. We were enriched by the relationships we formed with people but also became aware of the importance of non-humans, plants, animals and the unfolding sense of time in this place. At the same time we came face to face with some of the hardships and challenges created by the ongoing wildfires and drought.

We slowed down and began to look and listen, collecting what resonated from conversations, experiences, and research that helped to reveal further complexities and budding adaptations. We began to call those, ‘snippets’ and were inspired by the entangled understory that they brought to light. This was the beginning point for the 21 signs that we created and installed in the lowlands, uplands, ranch land and wetlands in Lake County Oregon.

The signs vary greatly – wooden signs, hand-painted signs, laminated paper, postcards and even a few that might surprise. Some signs look like they’ve been there for millions of years, like a ceramic rock that helps to tell the long history of the lake at the edge of the Albert Rim. Others pop-up in unexpected places, like under your beer at the local Paisley Saloon in Paisley, along the highway,  or in the Summer Lakes Hot Springs office and gift shop.

We imagine people coming across these signs in their daily lives and hope they surprise, foster curiosity and a willingness to look, listen and understand more about this complicated and incredible land.

A bit about our process.

How do you learn about a place with a deep history, current environmental challenges and lots of different viewpoints?

Our work began in Fall 2025 when we stepped in to Lake County in the midst of a series of megafires and ongoing drought. We knew that bringing our practice of looking and listening into action was needed if we were to begin to understand such a complex layered place. Stories began to stack up and reveal histories of adaptation, of shared labor, and of deep love and care for the land, the animals and the people who have lived in this place. Part of the gift of the residency was the many collaborators who we met that first fall. They presented information and research, shared their work and ideas and took us on field-trips to places that brought home the meaning in a physical and experiential way. We visited the uplands, the lowlands, the ranches, the lakes, the rims and the towns. As we walked and listened the complexities became more real.

We saw it. We smelled it. We felt it. And we were left with questions – how does a place survive? How do people move forward? How do people work together to heal themselves and the land?

In April 2026 we returned to Playa and set out to revisit some of the sites with our field guides. This time, we interviewed each onsite and asked them about their work, their collaborations, and to share their visions for the future.

In the evenings we would return to the studio and create large-scale banners of what we remembered from these conversations. As I mentioned, these signs with their snippets, inspired the form for our site-specific installation of the 21 signs across Lake County in September 2026.

A huge thanks to our collaborators!

We were fortunate to be introduced to so many folks while at Playa – other artists, ranchers, scientists, foresters, saloon owners and more. Many of them we owe a depth of gratitude for the hours they spent taking us on field trips, sharing their stories and research, and checking our work to make sure we got things right!
